It’s hard to believe that one of the most spectacular horses in the 2012 Kentucky Derby predictions list could be so underrated. In any case, this is great news for seasoned horse betting aficionados, as Liaison listed as a 40/1 [+4000] long-shot bet, is one of the greatest options on May 5th.
Under the direct care of Hall of Fame trainer, Bob Baffert, Liaison got his racing career off to a perfect start. Winner at the Real Quiet and the CashCall Futurity (Grade 1) races, Liaison put himself on the map going into the Robert B. Lewis (G2). Listed as the clear 9/5 betting odds favorite to win at Santa Anita Park, Liaison actually finished last due to some complications.
“He was awesome when I won on him, but in the Lewis when I fell, we were in perfect position,” said jockey Rafael Bejarano said. “He was coming from behind and was making a move at the end but when he came to the stretch, both horses in front of him were completely spread out, so I had a really good chance to come between them.
“But when I got close and tried to go through, the horse on the rail came out and the horse on the outside came in, so I had no choice. My horse clipped heels. It was not my fault. My horse was running, so you’d have to draw a line through that race."
The son of Indian Charlie would not be able to bounce back from the embarrassing loss, however, finishing fourth at the San Felipe (G2) -- with jockey Martin Garcia -- and a whopping 6th at the Santa Anita Derby (G1). Nevertheless, everyone from Baffert to owner Arnold Zetcher to his returning jockey believe that Liaison will be back at the winners’ circle on May 5th at Churchill Downs.
“The last time [in the San Felipe], he ran pretty good but it was a tough race and I don’t think he was quite ready, added Bejarano. “This time, he’s going to be ready. With a little luck and a good trip, he’s going to be tough. I know Creative Cause is a good horse but we’ll be closing, so we’ll see what happens.”
Thus far, Baffert seems to be very happy with the way his horse has looked during the 2012 Kentucky Derby predictions workouts. Liaison certainly caught everyone’s attention during Monday’s prep, completing a five-furlong breeze in 1:00 4/5 at Churchill Downs. According to his trainer, that’s the best he has looked since February of this year. "That's the best I've seen him work since back before he won the CashCall Futurity," Baffert added. "He's really taken to the track. Today he worked with Mile High Magic, who is a really nice horse, a fast horse. He was just gliding over it. I was really happy with him. I was hoping for a work like that to make the final decision to run the horse. He really went out well and Martin was really elated with the way he worked. He thought he worked really well.
"Today, he looked more like a Derby horse than he has in the last couple of months. I was pretty excited with the way he went. He still has a ways to go, but the way he went today I think definitely he deserves a chance to run in the Kentucky Derby. All systems are go."
