Panthers Ink 2nd Round QB Jimmy Clausen For Up To $6.3 Million: The Carolina Panthers came to terms with 2nd round QB Jimmy Clausen to a four-year deal worth $6.3 million. Clausen's contract has an escalater clause that could pay him $2.85 million in 2013. Clausen is the quarterback of the future for Carolina and will battle Matt Moore in camp. The Notre Dame product is coming off an outstanding junior season throwing for 3,722 yards with 28 TD’s and 4 INT’s.

NFL Picks Analysis: The undersized Clausen has drawn comparisons to Drew Brees who was a 2nd round draft choice in 2001. Clausen is accurate with good field vision but he doesn’t have the leadership qualities that Brees possesses. Clausen’s maturity and work ethic are not close to Brees‘s level. If Clausen stays healthy (which is also a question mark) he will be a mid-level starter in 3 or 4 years provided that he has a decent supporting cast with Carolina.
Right now Matt Moore is the better option but Clausen has more upside. Moore is more of a game-manger type that does everything pretty good but really nothing spectacular. Behind Clausen is another promising draft pick 6th round QB Tony Pike who could be a real sleeper.
