2010 Baseball Predictions - New York Yankees AL East: It’s spring training again and as our MLB picks staff is accustomed to seeing the New York Yankees are the MLB betting favorites to win the 2010 World Series. After eight long years the Yankees took home the World Series crown once again in 2009 and the expectations for the pinstripes is to win the Series again. The Yankees had to let go of some popular and key pieces of their World Series team but they addressed key areas on their roster and are in an excellent position to repeat.

Pitching: The Yankees rotation is among the best in baseball with C.C Sabathia, A.J Burnett, Andy Petitte and newly added Javier Vasquez. Pettitte is a little past his prime and Vasquez hasn’t proven that he can pitch at a high level in the A.L but this is the Yankees strength. The bullpen lost some quality relievers but some young talent is ready to step up and help ageless closer Mariano Rivera who is still an All-Star. Setup man Phil Hughes is also an excellent setup man that bolsters the ’pen.  

Offense: The Yankees are still potent on offense but they lost some power with the subtraction of Hideki Matsui. The big off-season signing was CF Curtis Granderson who brings improved defense and speed to the lineup. Aging players like C Jorge Posada and SS Derek Jeter could start declining this season however and Melky Cabrera and Johnny Damon will be tough to replace. This is still a good lineup but not a great one.

Intangibles: The Yankees still have their core players from last season’s World Series squad and an excellent manager in Joe Girardi. The team is more youthful than in year’s past and that could be a good thing. If the pitching staff remains healthy this team could repeat.
