2010 College Football Week 1 Picks: This looks like the year that North Carolina finally makes a run at the national title. A rough schedule stands in the way but a downright nasty defense will make life difficult for any team that crosses paths with the Tar Heels. How far this team goes will largely depend on how well the offense plays. The difference between the offense and defense is night and day but this could be a sleeper championship team.
The offense is green but has some potential. Their will be a QB battle in camp between the experienced but inconsistent senior T.J Yates and possible stud in redshirt freshmen Bryn Renner. Renner is polished for a young signal-caller with a big and accurate arm. Renner has a deep set of receivers led by game-breaker Jheranie Boyd. The O-line and running back positions are modest.
The Tar Heels have arguably more speed and talent on defense than any team in the country. With over a half dozen NFL prospects and great depth at all positions this D is loaded. The best of the bunch could be DE Robert Quinn who is unblockable. The defense is very opportunistic and is excellent at creating turnovers and making game-changing plays.
Head coach Butch Davis has done an excellent job at molding this team to his liking around a stifling defense. The special teams unit owns one of the conferences best kickers in Casey Barth.
