Miami Dolphins Lose DE Phillip Merling Sign Marques Douglas:  The Miami Dolphins lost starting DE Phillip Merling for the season with a torn A.C.L but quickly added depth by signing former N.Y Jets DE Marques Douglas. The 33-year old Douglas started every game for New York last season and signed a two-year deal worth $2.5 million. Douglas is likely to split time with rookie 1st round pick Jared Odrick who is a perfect fit as a 5-technique DE in Miami’s 3-4 scheme.

NFL Picks Analysis: Phillip Merling was a player on the rise before his injury with his non-stop moto and toughness but Douglas could actually be an upgrade. For all of his promise Merling was inconsistent and Douglas is a perfect fit at end in the 3-4 with his ability to anchor against the run. The Dolphins appear to be rock solid upfront with Douglas, Cameron Wake, Karlos Dansby, Koa Misi and Jared Odrick all good players. The 2010 Miami Dolphins NFL Futures Win Total is at 8.5 Wins with the OVER at -115.

Miami had some trouble stuffing the run this season ranking 18th in yards allowed but don’t be surprised if they end up in the top-10 this season. The removal of pass-rush specialist DE Jason Taylor and OLB Joey Porter raised eyebrows but their replacements are more well-rounded.
