UFC 117 Results: UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva retained his title strap with a last minute submission over #1 contender Chael Sonnen at 3:10 of the 5th round. Sonnen, 25-11-1, had completely dominated the fight until Silva, 27-4, executed a triangle choke from his back that quickly made Sonnen tap out. Silva got the win but the holes in his game were exposed as Sonnen repeatedly manhandled him on the mat. At age 36-years old it is very possible that Silva is no longer the pound-4-pound killer that he once was.
UFC 117 Results Analysis: In the co-main event middleweight contender Jon Fitch, 23-3, earned a title shot against Georges St. Pierre by easily out pointing Thiago Alves, 16-7, in a rematch 30-27 on all three cards. Four years ago Fitch KO’d Alves with a leg kick at UFC Fight Night 5. In the rematch Fitch repeatedly took Alves down and thwarted any sort of attack the Brazilian tried to mount. In the final minutes of the bout Fitch almost scored a stoppage with a rear naked choke but Alves survived. Alves’s days as a top UFC contender could be over as his limitations in takedown defense were once again exposed.
