The 2011 Preakness Stakes results produced some very generous payouts and below, you’ll find a complete list of the finishing order in yesterday’s race. For at least another year, the Triple Crown remained out of reach, extending the streak to 33 years without a winner of American horse racing's biggest prize. Animal Kingdom gave it an admirable run at Pimlico in the Preakness Stakes on Saturday, but ran out of room as Shackleford broke the wire first, just about a half a length ahead of the Kentucky Derby winner. And this time, unlike the Derby, there was no late fade from Shackleford and no late push from Animal Kingdom as the road to the Triple Crown ended at a dead end in Baltimore. Bodog.com had Shackleford listed as a 9-1 favorite by race time and if you had Animal Kingdom coming in second, then you won a pretty hefty exacta.

The slower pace allowed Shackleford, the pace-setter himself, to keep enough in the reserves to hold the rest of the field at bay down the stretch. Animal Kingdom pushed, Astrology tried to hang-on down the stretch and Dance City and Dialed In made late runs to no avail. It wasn't quite a photo finish, but with Animal Kingdom flying down the outside, Shackleford broke the wire in what must have been a moment of relief for his trainers. This was a very entertaining race which will set up a rematch between the Derby and Preakness winners when they run in the Belmont Stakes on June 11th. The horse racing odds for the third leg of the 2011 Triple Crown will be very tight between these two, but I believe that Animal Kingdom will be the odds-on favorite once again.

The exacta combination of Shackleford and Animal Kingdom paid out 111.80, while if you tacked on Astrology in third, the trifecta paid out 1401.80. These are some very nice payouts that were only made possible because of the order in which these horses finished the race. If Animal Kingdom would’ve finished first, all those payouts would be significantly lower. The superfecta brought along a very lucrative payout, as a 4th-place finish by Dialed In brought that payment to a whopping 6,212.60. With the Belmont Stakes right around the corner, start hitting the book and prepare yourself as it is never too early to start studying.
