Nick Zito is Dialed In for Redemption at the 2011 Preakness Stakes

Trainer Nick Zito would love nothing more than to start getting over a disappointing Kentucky Derby performance by cashing in on Dialed In’s Preakness Stakes odds and get him to the winners circle. Dialed In has been very consistent, with three wins and a close second in his first four races. He was last early behind a slow pace in the Kentucky Derby, and gained 9 1/2 lengths while finishing eighth of 19. That was as the mild 5-1 favorite, but it wasn’t a terrible performance either, considering the disadvantageous pace scenario. He lost by 7 1/2 lengths, and was beaten by only 4 3/4 lengths for second. Dialed In should be more effective if he encounters faster fractions in the Preakness and his horse racing odds at SBGGlobal.com have him listed as a mild 4-1 favorite again.

Dialed In enjoyed the benefit of a lively pace to chase in all three of his wins. His good performances in those races should have been discounted a bit though, as he disappointed as the 1-5 favorite in the race in which he finished second. He was unable to overcome a slow pace despite being the heavy favorite in a soft field. An unexpected defeat is always a cause for concern, especially when the probable reason for it has the potential to occur again. That weakness was exposed for a second time in the Kentucky Derby. He lacked tactical speed and was unable to muster the sustained strong late kick he needed to overcome another slow pace. Starting from the 10th post should make life easier for jockey Julien Leparoux and the only way he will cash in on his Preakness Stakes predictions is if he jumps out in the lead early in the race.

His eighth-place finish in the Kentucky Derby, and the introduction of a number of new contenders in the Preakness, might combine to make his odds somewhere around the same 5-1 price in this smaller field. Factor in the chance of a faster pace, and his supporters should consider that to be a reasonable price. Dialed In’s comes from a great bloodline that includes Mineshaft, which gives this colt a ton of stamina, but there is also a good amount of speed on the bottom half of his pedigree.
