Kentucky Derby 2011 Picks: Twice the Appeal vs Comma to the Top

calvin borel kentucky derby

There is a horse that has twice the appeal in terms of Kentucky Derby 2011 picks and that is all due to Calvin Borel, who decided to jump on his chances with one of the only horses left without the services of an experienced rider. In the head-to-head matchups at Bodog.com, Twice the Appeal and Comma to the Top have been paired up in battle between two jockeys on opposite sides of the sport right now. Calvin Borel might be the most well-known jockey in the sport and has been a part of two straight Derby wins and three of four overall. We keep hearing those numbers lining up for Borel, but the truth is, Twice the Appeal is only a 20-1 odds long-shot to win this race, but a -145 favorite to win this matchup. He doesn't have a great horse this year and another win would be a surprise, but it is always possible with Borel on the seat.

Comma to the Top will be mounted by veteran Pat Valenzuela, but his racing odds are listed at 30-1 and are just not that convincing. Twice the Appeal will be starting from the third post and Comma to the top will start from the 6th. If Borel can't dodge his way through the opening quarter-mile of this race, the field might bury him, giving Comma to the Top a chance to win this matchup. But if Borel avoids that mess and sets himself up to make a move coming around that second turn, then neither Comma to the Top nor anyone else has a better shot to win this race. I'm taking Twice the Appeal at -145 to beat out Comma to the Top and a few other horses I'm sure.

Comma to the Top is winless in three starts this year, with fourth-place finishes in the El Camino Real Derby at Golden Gate Fields and the San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita and a head loss in the Santa Anita Derby to Midnight Interlude on April 9. The mount on Comma to the Top will be the first in the Kentucky Derby for Valenzuela since Keyed Entry finished 20th in 2006. Valenzuela, 48, has ridden eight Kentucky Derbies, winning the 1989 running on eventual Horse of the Year Sunday Silence. Valenzuela won two of the three legs to the Triple Crown that year, so if the circumstances are right, the veteran jockey could surprise a lot of people on Saturday.
