NFL Predictions Offense: Alex Smith has only showed that he lacks ideal NFL tools essential to a quarterback. The intelligence, accuracy and surprising athleticism that got him drafted first overall in 2005 have been exposed by his inability to throw with bodies around him. Michael Crabtree’s stardom is inevitable. After sitting out virtually his entire rookie offseason with a bad foot, then missing training camp and the first five games because of a contract dispute, Crabtree stepped right in and showed the explosive skills and soft-yet-strong hands that made him the highest-touted receiver of the ’09 Draft. Talented as Crabtree is Vernon Davis who will still be the first option in 2010. Davis is the best route running tight end in football and the arrival of Ted Ginn Jr. should only make his life easier. NFL Predictions Defense: Third-round rookie Navarro Bowman couldn’t ask for a better inside linebacker to learn from than 13th year veteran Takeo Spikes. Though tight ends still have success against this defense, it’s worth noting that Willis’s improvements in coverage have made a world of difference. Willis has become a genuine playmaker against the pass (career high four sacks and three interceptions in 2009). Outside linebackers Parys Haralson and Manny Lawson will both dazzle with athleticism then disappear for long stretches. To be fair, both players are used more like cogs than featured weapons.
