Phillies at Marlins Free MLB Picks - August 5th, 2010: The Philadelphia Phillies (59-48) will look to continue their movement in the right direction tonight against the Florida Marlins (53-54), in the third and final game (Thursday 7:05pm ET) of this National League East matchup. The Phillies have won the first two games of this series and have won 12 of their past 14 overall. The Phillies have managed to creep back to just two games behind the Braves for the NL East lead. The Marlins on the other hand have been going south and are currently seated 8 games out. The Phillies will send out their newest reinforcement to the mound. Roy Oswalt (6-13, 3.53 ERA), who aside from getting touched up in his first start as a phillie, has not fared well against the Marlins. Oswalt's debut performance certainly wasn't what Philadelphia was hoping for as he surrendered five runs and 11 baserunners over six innings in an 8-1 loss at Washington on Saturday. Oswalt is 0-3 with a 7.20 ERA in three outings since the All-Star break. After going 5-2 with a 1.88 ERA in his first nine starts versus Florida, he's 0-2 with an 11.40 ERA in his past three, surrendering five homers in 15 innings. Shortstop Hanley Ramirez is 10 for 22 with two homers against Oswalt. Ramirez, however, is hitting .162 (6 for 37) over his last nine games.

Chris Volstad (5-8, 4.71 ERA) will try to help the Marlins put a stop to their three game losing streak, and avoid a sweep at the hands of the Phillies. The right-hander allowed seven hits and walked three over five innings Friday at San Diego, but yielded only two runs in a 4-2 victory. Volstad is 0-3 with a 4.07 ERA in four home starts against Philadelphia, but he'd much rather pitch at Sun Life Stadium than Citizens Bank Park. Volstad has a 3.65 ERA at home, nearly two-and-a-half runs lower than his road performance. Most importantly, he won't have to worry about injured slugger, Ryan Howard who is 9 for 20 with five homers against Volstad. Instead the Phils will look toi Raul Ibanez, who is hitting .393 with 14 RBIs since the All-Star break, and is 6 for 14 with two homers versus Volstad.
SBG Global Sportsbook has the Philadelphia Phillies (-121) as the strong road favorite over the stumbling Florida Marlins (+111). With Volstad pitching well at home but not consistently, and the uncertainty of how sharp Oswalt will be tonight, the over seems like the strong play here with the MLB Betting Odds total run line at 7.5.
