UFC 101 Odds: UFC Declaration hits the octagon at Wachovia Center in Philadelphia Saturday with a full night of betting action for MMA fans throughout the world. The UFC 101 odds card features a highly-anticipated double main event, with UFC lightweight champion B.J. Penn taking on No. 1 contender Kenny Florian and middleweight king Anderson Silva jumping up to light heavyweight to face Forrest Griffin.
Penn (13-5-1) has never lost at 155 pounds in UFC, and is priced at Bodog.com as a –205 favorite for his bout with Florian (13-3-0). With considerable experience against larger, stronger fighters (Matt Hughes, Lyota Machida, Georges St. Pierre), Penn has the strength advantage against the lanky Florian (+165).
Coming off a loss to St. Pierre at 170 pounds, Penn has to be pleased to be back fighting at his preferred weight. That doesn’t mean he won’t have trouble with Florian, who’s been perfect in the Octagon since his unanimous-decision loss to Sean Sherk over three years ago. Florian is on a six-fight winning streak since then, but hasn’t fought in 266 days.
Silva (24-4-0) is the consensus top pound-for-pound fighter in the world, and goes into Saturday night as a prohibitive –360 fave against Griffin. While Silva regularly tops 225 pounds in between fights, hopping into the Octagon at 205 pounds against Griffin will be no walk in the park. “The Spider” has only one bout at this weight to his credit, and that resulted in an easy first-round knockout of James Irwin last summer.
With his nine-bout UFC winning streak on the line, Silva could fight cautiously like he did in his last two fights against Thales Leites and Patrick Cote. The good news for Silva is Griffin tends to fight aggressively, and that could play right in to his hands as the world’s most dangerous counterpuncher.
Elsewhere at UFC 101, Leites (-330) looks to get back on track after his loss to Silva in Montreal by battling middleweight Alessio Sakara (+280). Also in the middleweight division, Ricardo Almeida (-150) locks up with Kendall Grove (+120), while lightweights Josh Neer (-220) and Kurt Pelligrino (+180) enter the Octagon.
