A cool $6 million will be on the line Saturday night, as the horse racing world celebrates one of the biggest and most lucrative races of the year, the 2016 Breeders’ Cup Classic. It is now Friday morning at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California, which means that post positions have been drawn and future odds set.
That puts the ball in our court, as it is now up to OSH to deliver some winning horse racing predictions for this mega-event. A total of 10 horses will throw their hats into the ring in what will be a star-studded field. Horse racing betting aficionados should note that post time for the 2016 Breeders’ Cup Classic is scheduled for 8:35 p.m. ET (Race #12) and it will be broadcast live on NBC beginning at 8 p.m. ET.
Qualifications for this Grade 1 race is strictly for thoroughbreds ages 3 and with the following weight limitations: 4-year-olds and up: 126 lb, 3-year-olds: Northern Hemisphere 122 lb, Southern Hemisphere 117 lbs and fillies and mares allowed 3 pounds. The winner will have to top the field for a distance of 1 1/4 miles on dirt surface. Here’s a look at the top three horses to beat:
2016 Breeders’ Cup Classic Top Contenders
California Chrome (1/1): Listed as the clear-cut favorite to win the 2016 Breeders’ Cup Classic by a landslide is none other than California Chrome. Under the watchful eye of trainer Art Sherman, the son of Lucky Pulpit is in the midst of one of those magical streaks seen every so often. California Chrome comes in with plenty of momentum, as he’s yet to lose a race in 2016. To be exact, the Kentucky Derby/Preakness Stakes winner comes in winner of six straight starts, including victories at Awesome Again (G1), Pacific Classic (G1) and Dubai World Cup (G1), just to name a few. California Chrome drew post position number four this week, and will be teaming up with jockey Victor Espinoza to try and get over the hump after finishing fourth in the 2014 Breeders’ Cup Classic.
Arrogate (5/2): Even though the 2016 Breeders’ Cup Classic future odds aren’t really that close, the biggest threat to California Chrome’s chances on Saturday is Arrogate at 5/2. Trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, Arrogate also comes in riding a good wave of momentum. Undefeated in his last four starts, the son Unbridled’s Song hopes to have the good to upset California Chrome. Having that said, Arrogate lacks experience, as this will only be his second Grade 1 race following his impressive victory at the 2016 Travers Stakes. After drawing post position number 10 on the far side, he will be joining forces with one of the best jockeys in the world when Mike E. Smith gets on mount.
Frosted (5/1): Helping round out our top three favorites in order of horse racing futures is another horse that also needs no introduction. Facing an uphill battle, four-year-old, Frosted will be a 5/1 underdog against California Chrome and Arrogate. Trained by Kiaran P. McLaughlin, Frosted is coming off a third-place finish in September’s Woodward (G1), but had won two straight prior to that loss, including the Whitney Handicap (G1) and Metropolitan Handicap (Met Mile-G1). He also finished seventh at the 2014 Breeders’ Cup, but captured titles in the following events: Wood Memorial (G1), Pennsylvania Derby (G2) and Al Maktoum Challenge – Round 2 (G2). Frosted will be charging out of position number two Saturday night and will have Joel Rosario as his jockey. For the record, Frosted got a chance to see California Chrome (Won) finish ahead of him after placing fifth in this year’s Dubai World Cup (G1).
