The countdown is officially on, as we are now just about a week away from the 2013 Breeders’ Cup, which means this is the perfect time to take a look at some of the contenders and issue our early betting picks.
The $5 million Grade I race takes place at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif., on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013. Post time is scheduled for 8:35 p.m. ET and it’ll be broadcast live on NBC.
This year, we have 13 free horse racing picks contenders – consisting of the best thoroughbreds ages 3 and up – competing on the 1¼-mile left-handed dirt track at Santa Anita Park.
The weight rules for the 2013 Breeders’ Cup Classic go as follows: 4-year-olds and up: 126 lb (57.2 kg); Northern Hemisphere 3-year-olds: 122 lb (55 kg); Southern Hemisphere 3-year-olds: 117 lb (53 kg); fillies and mares allowed 3 pounds.
According to horse racing odds specialists, there are five horses in particular that are almost certain to walk away with the title of 2013 Breeders’ Cup Classic champion.
First up is a name everyone in the horseracing world is familiar with, and quite frankly, fears. According to the experts, Game On Dude comes into this event listed as the clear betting picks favorite (+160) to keep his long win streak going.
Trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, the 2011 Breeders’ Cup Classic runner-up is back to add this race to his long list of accomplishments in a legendary career.
Why is this the perfect time to bet on the son of Awesome Again? The answer is simple: Because there’s no horse hotter than this 6-year-old Gelding right now.
Game On Dude comes in unbeaten in his last six starts, including victories at this year’s Pacific Classic-G1, Hollywood Gold Cup-G1, Charles Town Classic-G2, Santa Anita Handicap-G1 and San Antonio Handicap-G2.
Trying to end Game On Dude’s long win streak is Mucho Macho Man, who horse racing oddsmakers believe presents the biggest threat at +400 odds. This five-year-old is the son of Macho Uno, who finished “uno” in impressive fashion at last September’s Awesome Again-G1 race.
After a runner-up effort in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic – behind Fort Larned – Mucho Macho Man is back for that top spot in 2013.
Speaking of the son of the son of E Dubai, he and Will Take Charge are only separated by +100 in the list of 2013 Breeders’ Cup contenders betting odds.
Currently, Fort Larned is listed as +700, which is third best behind Will Take Charge, who’s a +600 projected third-placer finisher. Finally, rounding out the top five is another veteran of the sport.
According to horseracing oddsmakers, Declaration of War is currently listed as profitable +800 odds to win the 2013 Breeders’ Cup Classic.
The son of War Front will be trying to build off his victory at the Juddmonte International-G1 last August, and clearly has the experience, the pedigree and the talent to get it done.
For my money, I personally believe that this is the year Game On Dude will get it done. After finishing in seventh-place a year ago, this horse is feeling so confident, and has so much positive momentum right now, that I think he’s as close to unbeatable as he’s ever been, which is saying a lot.
