While there are a number of fresh horses racing in the Belmont Stakes this weekend, American Pharoah is still the pick to win the race. The Bob Baffert trained colt has not shown any signs of fatigue since winning both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes and, at least thus far, only one or two colts have been able to compete with him.
Of course, none of that guarantees American Pharoah anything come post time; however, it provides plenty of evidence that going against him on Saturday might be foolish. At the very least, he should be a top three pick on any ticket.
I am also taking Carpe Diem as a top three finisher. The Giant’s Causeway sired colt had won four races in five starts leading up to the Kentucky Derby, but it finished a lackluster 10th in the Run for the Roses after jumping from Post 2.
Trainer Todd Pletcher did not race Carpe Diem in the Preakness, so the colt should have plenty in the tank for the longer Belmont.
I like another Pletcher colt to contend as well, but not the lightly raced Materiality. Madefromlucky has finished outside the top three just two times in eight starts and he has plenty of experience at longer distances, having competed in five races of 1 1/16-miles or greater. The colt, who was sired by 2010 Preakness Stakes winner Lookin At Lucky, last raced on May 9, taking first in the Grade 2 Peter Pan Stakes.
