Kentucky Derby 2013 Contenders: Mylute Horse Predictions

by Blake Stevens on Thursday, May 2nd, 2013

Considering the forecast for the 2013 Run for the Roses, making your horse predictions is going to be critical especially among so many Kentucky Derby 2013 contenders.

One of the dark horses for this year’s Derby has to be Mylute, who’s easily one of the more seasoned thoroughbreds to enter the first leg of the Triple Crown. With nine career starts under his belt, the son of Midnight Lute is ready to shock the world on Saturday, May 4, 2013.

According to Kentucky Derby betting specialists, Mylute is currently listed as a 12/1 longshot to win the 139th running of the Kentucky Derby. For those non-math majors, that’s a very profitable +1200 money-line that has been assigned to this three-year-old colt.

Last month at the Louisiana Derby, Mylute rallied from behind only to lose by a neck to another Kentucky Derby 2013 contender, Revolutionary. Unfortunately for trainer Thomas M. Amoss, there’s one characteristic that’s missing from this horse’s racing career.

“He hasn’t quite shown that killer instinct you need to be a top racehorse,” he said. “He passed the winner, Revolutionary, in the final sixteenth of a mile, but he still didn’t quite understand. He learned from the Louisiana Derby, just like he learned from each of those races.”

Nevertheless, Amoss certainly hopes that experience plays a factor in this race, especially if it rains and conditions become dreadful. As a two-year-old, Mylute raced seven times and is only one of two horses in the field of 20 to have that many starts as a two-year-old.

“It took a long time for him to show me he was a proper horse,” Amoss added. “A lot of those starts were important in terms of his learning curve.”

  • OSH Kentucky Derby 2013 Horse Predictions: Can Mylute finally get over the hump, win a big race and stun the racing world? Well, I believe his best chance to win come Saturday will depend on Mother Nature and what she has in store for Churchill Downs Saturday night. I still believe this horse does lack that killer instinct his trainer referred to, but under rainy, muddy conditions, his experience should make up for some of his deficiencies. At +1200, I would definitely make a small investment on Mylute this weekend!
