Synchronised & According to Pete Dead After 2012 Aintree Grand National Racing Results

by Anthony Mason on Monday, April 16th, 2012

The 165th installment of the 2012 Aintree Grand National racing results took place last Saturday April 14, 2012, near Liverpool, England, ending with catastrophe. With a £975,000 purse on the line, 40/1 underdog Neptune Collonges took home the covered prize, but not without controversy and tragedy.

The biggest news following this event is the tragic accidents that occurred and the effect it will have on this race for the future. The first order of business will likely be the removal of the Becher’s Brook, a hurdle that is the staple of this event, along with the shirking down the number of horses competing at the event, which currently stands at 40.

Only 15 of the 40 participating horses were able to finish the race. The tragic news that two horses were put to rest after suffering fractured legs is taking the UK racing world by storm. Then two horses were Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Synchronised, who was listed as the horse racing predictions betting favorite to win this event, and According to Pete, who was listed at 33/1 longshot. Both were put down after the race because of their injuries.

"We are desperately sad at these two accidents and our sympathies are with the connections of both horses. When a horse gets hurt, everyone is deeply upset," said RSPCA Managing Director Julian Thick following the 2012 Aintree Grand National racing results. "Safety is the first priority for the organizers of the Grand National and we make every effort to ensure that everyone involved in the event is able to participate in safety.

"Horseracing is a sport that is very carefully regulated and monitored by the British Horseracing Authority, but risk can never be completely removed. All horses and riders in the Grand National have to meet very high standards set by an independent panel of experts. The Grand National is a professional and well-organized race. Only the best horses and the best jockeys are allowed to enter."

The favorite for this world-famous event was the Irish-bred/British-trained, Synchronised. Listed as a 13-2 favorite, he was expected to follow up his great performances at the 2011-12 National Hunt season before the accident that eventually claimed his life took place at the 2012 Aintree Grand National racing results. With victories at the Grade I Lexus Chase (Ireland) and Cheltenham Gold Cup (UK), Synchronised was trying to become the first horse since 1934 to also be victorious at Aintree in the same year.

Going into the race, trainer Jonjo O’Neill was very confident his 9-year-old horse would go down in the history books as the first to do it in 78 years later. “He came right in time for the Gold Cup and he just seems really well. If he had been third, fourth or fifth in the Gold Cup, everyone would have been saying the National was the right race for him,” O’Neill said days before the race. “We’d have loved to have put him in a glass case and just hugged and kissed him forever but he’s a racehorse and this is the race that suits him.”
