Oaklawn Park Race Track in Hot Springs, Arkansas will take center stage this Saturday, April 14, 2012, for the 2012 Arkansas Derby! It’s now time to take a look at the post position & odds for this 1 1/8-mile race and who will take home the $1 million purse! This is a Grade I race which will be on dirt surface, will consist of three-year-olds and has a distance of 9 furlongs.
As far as the early favorites go, Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert will once again be on the spotlight, as he will have two of the 11 horses in the race. Horse racing experts certainly like Baffert’s chances this weekend, as both Secret Circle and Bodemeister are among the top betting odds favorites.
Although winning the cool one mil would be nice, Baffert has his eyes set on a bigger goal: have two horses race in May 5th’s Kentucky Derby. Secret Circle currently ranks 11th in the Kentucky Derby’s eligibility list, while Bodemeister would need a victory in Arkansas to secure a berth to the “Race for the Roses.” Don’t forget to claim your Arkansas Derby predictions right here!
“Secret Circle has been getting the distance so far. He hasn’t shown me he can’t get it,” Baffert said, feeling much better following a heart attack in Dubai last month. “They can all get it until they show you they can’t. This’ll be a good race with some nice horses in there.
“I think Bodemeister will be tough. These are two really good horses and even though I don’t like to get ahead of myself, it’s always special just to have a horse that has a chance in the Kentucky Derby, so hopefully we wind up with one of those on Saturday.”
Secret Circle will be on the 5th spot in post positions, while Bodemeister will occupy the 11th slot. As far as 2012 Arkansas Derby predictions goes, I’m going to have to side with Secret Circle in this one. Despite the fact that Bodemeister is the clear favorite, the winner of last Fall Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Sprint is on fire right now, especially in this region!
Secret Circle will be trying to complete the Rebel-Southwest-Arkansas Derby sweep with a victory this Saturday. How good has he been thus far? It’s hard to imagine that his only career loss came in last January’s G3-Sham Stakes at Santa Anita, when he was bested by Out of Bounds.
