On September 14, the greatest pound-for-pound fighter in the world faces one of the biggest challenges of his career as Floyd “Money” Mayweather takes Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and we’ve got your winning fight predictions and boxing picks.
The MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev., will be the site for this historic light middleweight bout, which will be broadcast live at 10 PM ET on PPV.
Bovada Sportsbook’s boxing odds experts list Floyd Mayweather as a 5/14 (-280) favorite over Canelo Alvarez who’s currently as a great underdog at 11/5 (+220). The OVER/UNDER is set at a combined total of 11/5 rounds, as this fight is expected to go the distance.
For Mayweather, he’s indeed coming off a very impressive performance over Robert Guerrero, but one would argue that “The Ghost” had no business being in the same ring with him. In his first fight in a year, “Pretty Boy Floyd” did what he does to every opponent.
He utilized his great defense and footwork to frustrate his opponent and once he got his timing down, he outboxed him on his way to an easy unanimous decision victory. Although it was one of Mayweather’s best performances, it did very little to help him prepare for what the Mexican champion brings to the table.
In Canelo, Mayweather will get a young hungry lion that has the knockout power to dethrone even the greatest p4p fighter in the world today. While some may argue that Alvarez lacks the experience in this fight, he certainly makes up for it in every other facet of the game.
As much as people don’t want to admit it, the age difference in this fight will definitely play a role. Not only is he younger, bigger and stronger than Mayweather, but this kid is also very fast. When you take Canelo’s speed combined with his punching power, you’re looking at a guy that stylistically, is a bad matchup for the Money Team.
If the young Mexican can take a page out of Oscar De La Hoya’s fight against Mayweather, he will become the next WBC Light Middleweight and WBA (Super) Light Middleweight champion. Having that said, I believe that if Canelo is going to win this fight is not going to be by decision.
This kid is going to have to put Mayweather to sleep if he wants to be the one to end his unbeaten streak. But how does he do something that 44 other men have tried and failed at?
For one, he has to utilize his jab to set up his other punches. The way to get through Mayweather’s shoulder-roll defense is to suffocate him and rough him up. It’s no secret that Mayweather doesn’t like to get it, just ask Miguel Cotto, who was able to touch Pretty Boy’s face and even busted him up pretty good.
Now, of course, Mayweather wasn’t as defensive as he normally is against Cotto, which is part of the reason he got tagged pretty good. The point is, Canelo has a real shot at winning this thing, despite him being listed as a +220 dog for this free boxing picks fight.
As far as the experience gap is concerned, that sounds very much like what people were saying about Chris Weidman and Anderson Silva. If I were you, I’d take Canelo Alvarez as a very smart underdog bet against Floyd Mayweather.
