VCU vs Butler NCAA Final Four Bracket Prediction

by Michael Kashin on Saturday, April 2nd, 2011

The NCAA tournament has never faced bettors with such an unorthodox Final Four bracket prediction as it will when the #8 Butler Bulldogs square off against the #11 VCU Rams tonight at 6:09pm ET on CBS. These teams have become the highest combined seeds to ever meet in the Final Four in college basketball history. The Final Four odds at SBG Global Sportsbook have the Butler Bulldogs locked in as -2.5 point favorites for this game, with the line holding steady since the opening odds were released. These teams are very evenly matched but Butler holds the slight edge due to their experience in these types of situations. Brad Stevens wanted a chance to get his players back for a second crack at the title and his players delivered just that.

VCU is a deep team with Brandon Rozzell and Joey Rodriguez who round out the scoring as each averages in double figures. Rozzell has been the key to the Rams tournament success as he is shooting about 53 percent from three-point range and is the team’s third scorer. The Rams as a team have shot 44% from beyond the arc during the 2011 NCAA tournament, and compared to their 36% mark in the regular season, the Rams will be brought back down to earth by Butler, who will focus on limiting the long range shots.

Butler’s Shelvin Mack has come up huge for the Bulldogs lately, scoring 30 points against Pittsburgh and 27 points against Florida. For VCU, it has been forward Jamie Skeen who has had the hot hand and is coming of a 26-point and 10-rebound performance against Kansas. Skeen will provide a challenge in the post for Butler’s Matt Howard, but I look for Howard to rise to the challenge. Howard has done a great job of correcting the tendency to get himself into foul trouble and in order for Butler to get back to their second title game appearance in a row, it is essential that he continues that trend on Saturday evening.
